NAVIGATING CASE

How to Navigate a Case Effectively

When reading a case, you will find near the beginning, at the end, and scattered throughout it BOLDED access-words, primarily CAPITALIZED, of a variety of COLOURS enclosed within [BRACKETS].

eg:          [EXHIBIT C-7]

               [INTRODUCTION CASE 0001]

               [ADDRESSES]

               [AUTHORITY]

               [CASE 0001 CHAPTER 002]

               [BOOK 0001]

If you click your mouse on any of these access-words you will immediately jump to the specific screen holding the relevant information.

For example, if a quote is taken from a document, you will usually find an EXHIBIT access-word like [EXHIBIT C-10]. Clicking on to this access-word will bring you to a scanned image of a copy of the complete document, or, if not, at least a reasonable amount of the surrounding text so as to evaluate if a quote is unfairly given out of context.

We also have recognized that the scanned image may be difficult, if not impossible, to easily read. For this reason and for the reasons specified in [VALIDATION] we have included the ADDRESSES access-word. The ADDRESSES access-word is always followed by an identifier, eg: A-0002, as in [ADDRESSES] A-0002 (Note: the colour used for the access-word is irrelevant). Remembering the identifier, will allow you to quickly find the address we suggest you use to validate the authenticity of that specific document and the contents therein. Addresses are listed as:

A-0001

A-0002

A-0003

etc.

A similar system is used to help you find a specific book or publication. For the reasons identified in [RESPECTING AUTHORSHIP], we have only scanned in an identifying page from the book or publication we are quoting. Usually this identifying page will contain enough information so that you will be easily able to find the same book or publication at your local bookstore or library. However, in the event that the scanned copy is not clear due to the scanning or with respect to obtaining a copy, should you so desire, we have type all the particulars of the BOOK at the end of the [BOOK 0001].

Access-words such as [INTRODUCTION CASE 0001] and  [AUTHORITY]  are used to reduce unneeded repetition while still making review possible. A clear example would be as it is used in CASE 0001 where [INTRODUCTION CASE 0001] not only introduces CASE 0001 but also specifies a clear relationship that may be put to the question. So rather than repeating information you already know a reference is simple made to [INTRODUCTION CASE 0001] allowing you to refresh your memory or simply go on reading because you remembered. This would also be true with any of the EXHIBIT references. Sometimes an EXHIBIT may be referred to over and over again to the point of nausea. You know what=s in the EXHIBIT, you=ve seen it often enough, so you find no point in returning to it at that specific time. But here again, two weeks may pass and your mind is filled with piles and piles of additional information and all of a sudden that EXHIBIT you knew so well two, three weeks ago comes up again but now it is no more than a blur, so now you need to review it again. This could hold true with such access-words as [INTRODUCTION CASE 0001] and [AUTHORITY]. So once you have read them, unless you need to refresh your memory, there is little point in reviewing them each time they may come up.

Once you have examined the information found by clicking the access-word, simply press your BACK ARROW and return from whence you came. Should you be in the ADDRESSES access-word, you may need to click twice to get back to CASE file. eg: if ADDRESSES is accessed via the EXHIBIT access-word. If, however, you have run into any difficulty, you can also go back to the [HOME] page and from there re-enter the CASE at the specific CHAPTER.
